Common Implant Concerns

Jul 6 • 2 minute read

Dental implants are one of the newest, most effective, and most popular teeth replacement options available in dentistry. Naturally, that reputation comes with people wondering how exactly this treatment works. Our dentists would like to address some common dental implant concerns that you may have.

Placement and Specialists

The most immediate point of confusion among patients is determining where they should go for dental implant placement. On the one hand, the surgical nature of placement seems to be a matter best left to a specialist. On the other, some general dentists offer the service and argue that staying with them enables a more comprehensive and convenient implant treatment process. So, who should you go to: a specialist or a general dental practice?

If you come to Westford Dentistry, you do not have to choose. Our practice has a dedicated periodontal specialist, Dr. Park, who can perform implant placement. However, Dr. Rashid and Dr. Ross are on hand to help coordinate your overall treatment plan. You get the benefits of both the specialist and general dental approach when you undergo implant placement with us.

Healing Period Length

While dental implant restorations offer more benefits to patients than traditional options, they are not attached right after treatment. Once implants have been placed, it can take between three to six months before they are ready to host a crown, bridge, or denture. Why does it take so long for implants to serve as your new teeth?

The answer is osseointegration. This process allows an implant to permanently fuse to the jawbone, becoming the stable root of your new tooth. By giving your implant post the proper times to integrate into the jaw, we promote a successful implant treatment.

The Difference in Dentures

Many patients are often surprised to find that the restorations added to implants are similar to traditional prosthetics. This situation is especially true of removable implant-supported dentures, which are made of the same materials as traditional full dentures. What makes implant dentures different from full dentures?

Simply put, having a removable implant denture offers superior stability to regular dentures. Traditional dentures have a bad habit of sliding around the mouth, making it difficult to speak or eat. Removable yet implant-retained dentures stay in place when in use.
