Invisalign or Traditional Braces?

Jun 22 • 2 minute read

Many people want to avoid full orthodontic treatment, and Invisalign clear braces provide the opportunity do so. This is not always the case, however, as metal braces are sometimes necessary to treat severe alignment issues. Westford Dentistry provides Invisalign Clear Braces for qualifying patients who want a straight smile without the use of metal. We have created this guide to highlight the benefits of Invisalign and full metal braces.

Which Treatment is More Effective?

Metal braces are the standard option when correcting bite problems. They are proven to shift teeth properly and have a long-lasting effect, especially when the patient has severe bite issues, such as crossbite and large gaps.

Invisalign treatment is equally effective in aligning teeth, but only up to a certain level. Invisalign treats minor to moderate misalignment, a range that includes crooked teeth, uneven spacing, and minor bite problems. It is also not recommended for children and teenagers, as they have to be responsible for changing out the aligners every two weeks. Adults have the most to gain when choosing the clear aligners, as they don’t require any lifestyle changes besides consistently wearing the appliance.

A Convenient Alternative

Invisalign aligners introduce convenience to orthodontic treatment. They are completely removable, a feature that lets you eat and brush your teeth without complications. The aligners are comfortable to wear, as they are custom-made to fit your smile and are fabricated from clear plastic. People may not notice them when worn, and as you advance through treatment you will be able to see the progression.

In comparison, metal braces are known for not being comfortable, and many orthodontic patients do not enjoy having a restricted diet. Furthermore, the brackets and wires make it difficult to clean the smile. Invisalign braces afford patients much more freedom to pursue daily life without any changes, but there is the added responsibility of switching out aligners. For treatment to be successful, patients must be diligent with their aligners and be mindful of when to switch out for the next set.
